Bright Colors in the Kitchen

Another trend that I am really loving right now is using bright colors in the kitchen.  Adding bright colors to your kitchen is and easy and inexpensive way to make the space stand out and add personality. There are many different elements of a kitchen that look great in bright colors, for example,  the cabinets, the backsplash, barstools, or cooking utensils. However, I would  recommend picking only one element of your kitchen and coloring it brightly, then having to other elements be neutral colors, that way, that bright colored element stands out, and the space is not too bright. The best colors to use in a kitchen are shades of orange, yellow, blue, green, and red in your kitchen, using these colors can really help a space seem more welcoming.  Personally I think that blue looks the best in kitchens because it helps brighten up a space but still keeps it looking clean and polished.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry is very popular in interior design right now.  Unlike symmetry, which has been very popular in interiors previously, asymmetry can make a space feel playful, casual, and overall more interesting. However, if not used right, asymmetry can make a space feel messy and out of balance, that is why it is important when using asymmetry in interior design to keep the visual weight on both sides of the room even.  The visual weight of an object is how heavy an objects looks to us.  If the visual weight on both sides don’t line up, there is no need to worry. The visual weight of an object can be altered in many different ways.  In my opinion, the three easiest ways to make an object feel heavier are: to alter the position of it because the farther away an object is from the center of the room or the focal point, the heavier it will seem, to change the orientation of the object because objects that face diagonally seem to weigh more, and to change the color of the object, because the darker that the color is, the more that it will seem to weigh.

Shades of Blue

Using different shades of blue in your interior is very trendy right now. Blue is a very versatile hue, shade of blue range all the way from indigo to peacock to ice blue.  Blue is also a very calming and soothing color. This is part of the reason why blue is one of the most popular colors for interiors right now. One of my favorite shades of blue right now is turquoise blue. Turquoise blue is a very fun and playful color and can make any space more lively. I would recommend using turquoise.   Another one of my favorite shades is ice blue.  This is a very calming shade of blue and is also very classy. I would recommend using icy blue for the walls of a room because  it is a lighter color and using lighter colors on walls can make a space seem larger and more open.

Contemporary Wallpaper

Using contemporary wallpaper is a new take on classic interior design.  Instead of using floral prints and dulled colors of older wallpaper, contemporary wall paper uses modern textiles and prints and brighter colors to make it look less old-fashioned.  I would recommend pairing this type of wallpaper with either minimalist of industrial style furniture that uses neutral colors so that when paired with the brightly colored wallpaper, it doesn’t look like too much.  I would also only decorate one wall of a space with the wallpaper and paint the other walls basic colors like black, grey, or white so that the space is not overwhelming.  I think that wallpaper looks better when the prints on it involve geometric shapes instead of floral patterns, which can make a room look kind of outdated.  Overall, I think that while contemporary wallpaper is a bold, and fun way to add color and depth to a room, if overdone it can make a space look overwhelming and messy and seem smaller than it actually is.

Mixing Metals

One of the trends in interiors that I really love right now is mixing metals. If done right, mixing metals instead of having just one can add more personality to a space.  This was a huge trend in the 1950s and 60s and lately it’s been coming back.  I love this look because it gives interiors a retro element while still keeping it looking modern. Unlike mixing other finishes which can make a space look messy and unorganized, its okay to mix metals because they are neutral colors.  I especially like when lighter colored metals are mixed with darker colors to create a contrast, like silver and brass. This helps add balance to the space because while lighter colored metals, such as gold, make a space feel warmer, darker colored metals like chrome can make it feel cooler.  I also like mixing matte and shiny finishes on the metal.  However, metals are usually expensive, especially if they are used as one of the main features.  A cheaper alternative would be to mix different metallic finishes; this would achieve the same effect without spending as much money. Mixing metals is also a big trend in jewelry and fashion right now
